Apple is reportedly still working to add reverse wireless charging to a future iPhone after having missed the deadline to add it to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Reverse wireless charging would allow an iPhone to charge another device, likely the company’s AirPods and AirPods Pro earbuds.
While other companies already offer similar functionality on their own high-end phones, Apple reportedly wasn’t able to get things ready in time for its 2022 iPhone launch.
Now, 9to5Mac says that Apple continues to work on the technology for a future release.
The sources say that Apple had hoped to include full support for reverse wireless charging on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but the feature wasn’t finalized in time for that launch. Despite missing this target, Apple engineers are still working on the feature and hope to debut it in a future iPhone.
Apple is reportedly working on a more advanced reverse charging implementation than others use, with a “wireless power out” firmware being used as the basis for the feature, according to the report. That’ll handle things like managing the charging speeds of devices to ensure heat isn’t an issue.
While it’s good news to hear that reverse wireless charging is still something Apple intends to release, there is still no indication of when it will be ready.
