September 9th is just days away, which means we will soon have answers as to what the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will bring to the party after months of speculation. Without doubt, the biggest thing that has caused the most rumors is the possible, or probable inclusion of some sort of Force Touch technology. First debuted in the Apple Watch and then in new MacBooks, Force Touch allows the screen or trackpad to tell a tap from a press, allowing menus and other functions to be made available without cluttering the user interface. The inclusion of such technology on an iPhone could be game-changing.
A new report by 9to5Mac claims that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will feature a new and improved Force Touch, dubbed ‘3D Touch’ display, bringing even more functionality to the existing pressure-sensitive input technology.
The 3D moniker comes from the fact that this new Force Touch variant will allow the iPhone to differenciate between a tap, a press and a third, deeper press, whereas the Apple Watch and MacBooks can only sense the first two. This would potentially allow both Apple and developers to create shortcuts within their apps throughout both iOS and applications, either adding new functionality or removing the need for certain always-on-screen aspects of an interface.
With Apple likely to release an iPad Pro within weeks, and if the rumored pen-based input is to come to fruition, then a screen that can better sense pressure would be hugely beneficial to that. If 3D Touch display is indeed a reality, then we would’t be at all surprised to see it arrive in the iPad Pro, too.
Apple’s September 9th event is expected to bring with it two new iPhones, a new Apple TV 4, a new and improved iPad mini 4 alongside the oft-rumored iPad Pro.
