The iPhone 6 rumor mill is showing no signs of slowing down, and even though we’re fairly sure that Apple is plotting two new iPhones with considerably larger displays than the current 4-inch panel of the iPhone 5s, it is now being offered that the resolution will clock in at a whopping 2560 x 1440.
The LG G3, which the Korean outfit only recently announced to the world, packs a 2560 x 1440 resolution over a 5.5-inch diameter. But while the larger of the two new iPhone configurations is said to dip into phablet territory with a 5.5-inch panel of its own, it would seem inconceivable that the smaller, 4.7-inch variant would necessitate such sharpness.
The report originates from Hong Kong, and cites “Apple employees” in claiming that the iPhone 6 will include this quad-HD panel. Yet it doesn’t, unfortunately, make note of precisely which iPhone, if not both, will benefit.
Our guess is that if this report has any legitimacy, Apple will probably only bring QHD to the bigger iPhone. Apple could market the device as better-than-Retina, and in turn justify the reported $100 price bump over the 4.7-inch model.
An opposing theory to this is that both devices will pack an identical resolution of 1704 x 960, which would be a 50% increase in resolution over the iPhone 5s. This would mean that the larger iPhone 6’s display would be less sharp than that of its less sizeable counterpart, but given how they would both still comfortably fall within the boundaries of the company’s Retina standard, it’s not completely unfathomable that Apple may instead opt for this system.
Still, a quad-HD display is a very, very exciting prospect for what is already poised to be the biggest iPhone launch since the first-gen model arrived back in 2007, and with analysts suggesting that many Android users will jump ship if Apple does finally cave in and go larger, the Cupertino looks set to enjoy yet another record-breaking year with its flagship handset.
A resolution of 2560 x 1440 does seem like overkill, but this could be a contributing factor to the reported delays of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6, and if Apple does exceed expectation by matching the specs of the LG G3, it’ll almost certainly be worth the wait.
