Even in the midst of Mobile World Congress, Apple has managed to end up grabbing headlines after an analyst claimed that the company’s iPhone 6 will be available sooner than expected. In fact, according to Mizuho Securities analyst Abhey Lamba, the highly anticipated new iPhone could be on stores as early as July, months before the usual September release timeframe that Apple has used in the past.
There is currently little known about what Apple has in store for the iPhone 6, but Lamba’s sources in the supply chain have apparently led the analyst to believe that a range of screen sizes from 4.7-inches to 5.5-inches are on the cards, no matter how unlikely it seems that Apple would launch multiple devices rather than stick to its tried and tested approach of offering a one-size-fits-all handset. Needless to say, we suggest taking that one with a pinch of salt that’s at least 5.5-inches big.
Beyond the question of screen sizes, it is also now suggested that Touch ID will get a boost by being able to interact with more apps as well as making the jump from the iPhone to the iPad this year.
According to Street Insider, the analyst is basing his claims on information from the Asian and Japanese supply chains, which can be either hugely accurate or ridiculously inaccurate. We’ll have to see which it is this time.
“Recently, the company has been introducing new lineup in September time frame whereas the next generation phones could come out in July this year,” he said. “The earlier launch will be helpful for Apple as it will ensure significant availability and distribution of the new device during the holiday season.”
In addition, checks also indicated that the company seems to be gearing up to launch a watch and next generation Apple TV later this year. ” While the timing of the launches is uncertain, we would expect these products to be introduced in 2H14,” he said.
If the iPhone 6 really is going to be around earlier than previously expected then we’d expect to start seeing more information leak out during the coming weeks and months, but given our level of skepticism, we’re not going to start holding our breath just yet.
We’ve already seen a leaked set of photos of what is claimed to be the outer shell of the iPhone 6, and based on those leaks, it’s safe to say that we will see an iPhone with a larger display this year. But again, it’s a leak, and their legitimacy can’t be traced, so sit tight and we’ll know in the days to come what Apple is really cooking in Cupertino.
