We’ve been inundated with coverage of the iPhone 6’s exteriors, and also, information regarding some of the new hardware that Apple might pack into the upcoming device. What we haven’t seen much of, though, are actual leaks of the handset’s internals, but with the manufacturing process reportedly about to commence, we’re expecting this to change. Today, we’ve got what is claimed to be our first legitimate sighting of an iPhone 6 component in the form of flex cable parts relating to the power and volume buttons, as well as the mute toggle. Below, we scrutinize these new findings.
We’re already fairly sure that the iPhone 6 is set for some significant design alterations both inside and out, and this new discovery only but underlines this notion. With the current iPhone 5s, the power button / mute switch / power button are conjoined as one, but as you can see from this leak, there are two separate flex cables covering these physical buttons and switches.
Given that we’re expecting the iPhone 6 to grow considerably in size, it is reckoned that Apple will relocate the power button from the top of the device to the side, enabling users with average-sized hands to reach it without developing a repetitive strain injury. This emergence of separate parts for power and volume seem to back this claim up, and although it’s difficult to verify such blurry looking images sourced from Taiwan, it’s looking very much likely that the oft-seen, iPad-like form factor represents the eventual aesthetic of the iPhone 6.
In September, Apple will reportedly announce a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 as well as a further 5.5-inch variant, although it is widely suspected that the latter will be subject to delay thanks to issues with both the display and the battery. Given that we’ve seen precious little of this more sizeable configuration, it’s probable that the reports aren’t too far off the mark, in which case, we can anticipate that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will manifest in October or perhaps even later than that.
Whatever the case, it now seems all-but certain that the power button will be repositioned alongside the volume buttons, and hopefully, we’ll catch a few more plausible leaks during the course of the next two or so months.
