So, as predicted, the iPhone 5 is no more, and the iPhone 4s remains in the roster among the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. To help prospective shoppers out, Apple has thrown up a comparison chart of the three models, and since we’re scarcely acquainted with the iPhone 5s or 5c ourselves, we’ll gather a better view on how they stand up against each other.
Obviously, one of the key factors in this debate will be the price. The iPhone 5s starts at $199 subsidized by a two-year contract, running all the way up to $399 for those in the market for the high-end 64GB model. The iPhone 5c, meanwhile, is priced between $99 and $199, which is a considerable difference, and with the iPhone 4s – still a substantial device by our reckoning – costing nothing on contract, the big three Apple smartphones present a bit of a dilemma.
If you’re looking for LTE, you’re definitely going to be choosing between the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, since the iPhone 4s doesn’t support it. This may not be a major stumbling block for some, but if you want to future-proof your device as much as possible, grabbing a 4G LTE-compliant model would be advised.
The A5 chip of the iPhone 4s was very capable in its day, and the A6 of the iPhone 5 and now, iPhone 5c, is more than enough for day-to-day tasks. But the Apple A7, with 64-bit architecture, allied to the M7 motion coprocessor really present a step up for the iPhone 5s. Animations will be smoother, and the new flagship should be a lot stronger when really put through its paces.
The cameras have gotten progressively stronger since the iPhone 4s, and the iPhone 5c, which borrows its camera (and basically everything else) from the iPhone 5, will be able to deliver the improved low-lighting shots Apple waxed lyrical about around this time last year. The iPhone 5s features True Tone flash, which brings more realistic lighting in dark situations, and is generally a slightly better shooter than the iPhone 5.
It’s kind of strange to see the iPhone 5 so unceremoniously banished from existence, and what was yesterday’s flagship is now basically obsolete. Still, it lives on in essence thanks to the iPhone 5c being little more than a plastic version, and whichever flavor of iPhone you decide upon, be sure to check out the comprehensive table of specs.
