Due to the release schedule, it has appeared in recent years that we no longer get a year’s overlap for a manufacturer’s flagship handset. Instead of the iPhone 5s and the Samsung Galaxy S4 coming out in the same month, we get an intermission period where the competition for the S4 was the iPhone 5.
This trend will continue, until either one of these large conglomerate change their release schedule, or change their product line entirely. The Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One, two of the hottest smartphones on the planet, have been available for purchase for a little over 6 months, and only now is Apple releasing their answer to their competition.
The iPhone 5s seems to be capable of going toe-to-toe with these two monster flagships, however only time will tell whether the consumer thinks otherwise. This doesn’t change the fact, however, that until successors to the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are announced, they remain to be the iPhone 5s’s main competitors. For this reason, it seems fit to break down what actually makes these handsets the standard of quality they are, and the first step is to compare the hardware that each handset uses:

Whilst the Galaxy S4 is on track to be one of the best selling smartphones of all time, most people who have an interest in technology will tell you that its hardware isn’t particularly its strong point. Instead of going with hard plastic, glass and metal, like many of the mainstream manufacturers these days do, Samsung decided to stick with their famous plastic material, which in my mind is associated with the term ‘cheap’.
HTC and Apple are years ahead in the hardware game, and this is clearly represented by the quality of their flagship handsets. Both the HTC One and the iPhone 5s look, and feel like the premium products they should be expected to be. The Galaxy S4 is far lighter, and in my opinion, far worse in quality compared to its competitors – in build quality at the very least – and I personally think that Samsung seriously needs to think about how, and why their smartphones are being created.
