If you’ve been following the iOS 6 jailbreak saga, you’ll know that things haven’t run as smoothly this time around as with previous iOS releases. But with so many talented individuals on the case, it was only going to be a matter of time, and with this Sunday being the day of the Super Bowl, it would appear as though the Evad3rs team will be ready to drop an untethered jailbreak for those on iOS 6.x, making for a great weekend all around.
The likes of Planetbeing have been running untethered jailbreaks on their devices for some time, but instead of rushing out the release and allowing Apple to plug it with iOS 6.1, the Evad3rs team, which is also comprised of Pimskeks, Pod2g, and MuscleNerd, has wisely retained the exploit. Now, with iOS 6.1 having just been released, Planetbeing has tweeted the words many of you will have been waiting an eternity to hear:
iOS 6.1 appears to be vulnerable to the exploits we are planning on using. 🙂
Before we could dare ask when this long-awaited untether would surface, MuscleNerd waded in, adding:
Hey, did everyone know the Super Bowl is this Sunday? What will you be doing? /cc @evad3rs
While it’s not absolute confirmation, it seems more than just a subtle hint that the untethered jailbreak could be ready as early as Sunday.
It’s been a long, winding road to here – on the cusp of an untethered jailbreak release, and for a while, it was looking as though we may not even see a jailbreak at all. With every new release of iOS, Apple tightens security, and naturally, shuts many doors previously exploited by the jailbreak Gods.
Now, with some of the most talented heads in the game having collaborated to a successful outcome, it’s almost as though the jailbreak was never in doubt, and it would certainly cap off a great Super Bowl Sunday if we were treated also to an untether.
The jailbreakers like to be cryptic, and often drop hints merely to throw us off, so it’s worth not getting too ahead of ourselves at this point. Moreover, Planetbeing also talks of two proof of concepts in need of merging and polishing, and thus the jailbreak "will not be ready to release until that [merging, polishing] and testing" has taken place.
Those who are interested in knowing which devices will be supported by the upcoming jailbreak should check out our earlier post. And those of you who have iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4 can jailbreak iOS 6.1 tethered using Redsn0w.
