iPhone 4 Is The Slimmest Smartphone, Not The Samsung Galaxy S II: UK Advertising Standards Authority

According to a report published today, an advertisement authority in the UK has ruled that it is Apple’s iPhone 4 which can claim the title of the “world’s slimmest smartphone” and not Samsung’s Galaxy S II.

The news comes from TechCrunch where it was reported that Advertising Standards Authority of the United Kingdom has blocked Samsung from claiming that they have the world’s slimmest smartphone.

The reason being given for this is that the Apple iPhone 4 measures 9.3mm thick from top to bottom whereas the Samsung Galaxy S II is mostly 8.71mm thick, except at the bottom where it gets 9.91mm thick (this ‘bump’ is where the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular-related hardware is housed; it also increases grip).

From TechCrunch:

The ASA ruled that since the iPhone’s thickest point is thinner than the Galaxy S II’s thickest, Apple has the right to continue claiming the title. Samsung likely isn’t too pleased — save for a single thick bit, their GSII is mostly thinner, and Apple gets to maintain their positioning (in the UK at least) as purveyors of slim, sleek design.

What this essentially means for Samsung is that they won’t be able to advertise the Galaxy S II as “the world’s slimmest smartphone” in the United Kingdom. There is, however, a loophole Samsung can use to add in “slimmest smartphone” in their ads, which we’ll talk about in a bit.

This is really not going to be a big problem for the company, I’d say, as there is still lots of other titles Sammy could use for the Galaxy S II, like, for example: the world’s fastest smartphone and the world’s most advanced display (Super AMOLED Plus is amazing!).

There is one title that the Samsung Galaxy S II indisputably holds which no other smartphone can claim: that of the slimmest dual-core smartphone. This is while the Japanese, Android-based NEC Medias N-04C holds the title of the slimmest single-core smartphone (only 7.7mm thick!).

The Samsung Galaxy S II is a best selling smartphone, having sold more than 5 million units in just 85 days. Keep in mind that Galaxy S II hasn’t even launched in the United States yet!
