iPhone 16e MagSafe Support: Here’s Why Apple Didn’t Add It

When Apple announced the iPhone 16e it said that while it did support wireless charging, it would not support MagSafe.

That means that it doesn’t have the magnets required to attach to MagSafe or Qi2 accessories, and now Apple has explained why that is the case.

Apple representatives have spoken to Daring Fireball‘s Joh Gruber to explain the commission, and the reason is really rather simple. According to them, people who are most likely to buy an iPhone 16e simply wouldn’t use MagSafe even if it was there. They believe that “most people in the iPhone 16e’s target audience exclusively charge their phones by plugging them into a charging cable.”

The lack of MagSafe support doesn’t prevent wireless charging, but it does mean that the iPhone 16e will charge more slowly than the rest of Apple’s lineup. It’ll be limited to the 7.5W charging of standard Qi chargers, around half that of MagSafe models. In fact, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro support 25W MagSafe charging.

Buyers of the iPhone 16e won’t only miss out on fast wireless charging, though. They’ll also lose out on support for things like MagSafe wallets, car holders, and more.

If any of that is important to you, there are at least ways to get the magnetic portion of MagSafe back — you can buy a case that supports it and has magnets of its own. It won’t solve the slower wireless charging speed, though.
