Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to be the first iPhone to use a periscope camera lens while keeping it exclusively to itself. Now, a new report suggests that Apple intends to do the same with the iPhone 16 Pro Max also.
With Apple not putting a periscope camera into the iPhone 15 Pro, it was thought that the iPhone 16 Pro could be the one to see the camera move down the lineup for the first time.
However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo now says that won’t happen. “Only one/the highest-end model of the new 2H24 iPhone 16 series may have a periscope camera, not the two models of market expectation,” Kuo said in a series of tweets on the subject.
The use of a periscope camera allows phones like the iPhone 15 Pro Max to offer increased levels of zoom without making the phone thicker. Zoom requires that the lens and camera sensor be further apart, something that normally requires extra thickness. But a periscope camera elongates the gap between the lens and sensor by turning the camera on its side.
Samsung and some other phone makers already use periscope cameras in their own phones and Apple is widely expected to follow suit with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Now, it looks like it’ll do so with the iPhone 16 Pro Max, too.
If all goes according to plan we can expect Apple to announce the iPhone 15 series of phones in or around September later this year.
