The new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro devices finally go on sale in a few days after months of rumors, and we’re still learning more and more about the new flagship handsets.
One new tidbit is the fact that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro can be restored wirelessly using another iPhone or iPad.
This means that, for the first time, restoring an iPhone from Recovery Mode no longer requires that users plug the iPhone into a computer. Instead, 9to5Mac reports, that simply placing the iPhone near another iOS or iPadOS device will be enough to begin the restoration process.
Essentially, when the iPhone 16 enters Recovery Mode for some reason, users can simply place it next to another iPhone or iPad to start the firmware recovery. The other device will download a new iOS firmware and transfer it to the bricked device. This means that a Mac or PC will no longer be needed to fix firmware issues on iOS devices.
This now matches a similar system that allows Apple Watches and Apple TVs to be restored wirelessly, and it could be a real boon for people who don’t have a computer to hand but need to get a bricked iPhone back up and running.
While any iOS 18 device can be used to initiate the Recovery Mode restoration, it appears that only the iPhone 16 models can be restored wirelessly.
