If you’ve been using your iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max to play games over the last few days you might have already noticed that it can get a little bit warm when placed under continued strain.
If you have, you aren’t alone and some people have pointed the finger at the fast A17 Pro chip that powers these things.
However, a new report by the respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo now pours cold water on that theory.
Writing in a Medium post Kuo says that the 3nm fabrication process used to create the A17 Pro chip isn’t at fault here. Instead, he says it’s down to Apple’s desire to make the new iPhones as light as possible, something that has impacted their ability to stay cool.
“My survey indicates that the iPhone 15 Pro series overheating issues are unrelated to TSMC’s advanced 3nm node,” Kuo’s post begins. “The primary cause is more likely the compromises made in the thermal system design to achieve a lighter weight, such as the reduced heat dissipation area and the use of a titanium frame, which negatively impacts thermal efficiency.”
The fix, he believes will be a software update that will slow down the A17 Pro to ensure that it doesn’t get quite so hot. If that does happen it will be bad news for people who are looking forward to playing console-quality games on their iPhones. That’s something Apple has made a big deal about and it might struggle to backtrack on.
