After a year of rumors they’re both here — the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are both official, and they’ll go up for preorder this weekend.
Apple announced the new flagship phones alongside the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, confirming much of what we had learned from the leaks over the past few months.
The new iPhones do indeed come with an Action button to replace the mute switch, with Apple promising that the new A17 Pro chip is going to change the way people play mobile games with incredible performance.
That new chip has an impressive-sounding GPU, all helped by the new TSMC 3nm manufacturing process.
Continuing Apple’s leadership in smartphone silicon, A17 Pro brings improvements to the entire chip, including the biggest GPU redesign in Apple’s history. The new CPU is up to 10 percent faster with microarchitectural and design improvements, and the Neural Engine is now up to 2x faster, powering features like autocorrect and Personal Voice in iOS 17. The pro-class GPU is up to 20 percent faster and unlocks entirely new experiences, featuring a new 6-core design that increases peak performance and energy efficiency.
The new GPU enables console-level gaming with Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage all coming to the App Store.
Apple also confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max does indeed have a new zoom camera, offering 5x optical zoom at 120mm. The new camera also sports a vital stabilization system that makes the tetraprism design able to take crisp shots no matter what.
iPhone 15 Pro features an expansive 3x Telephoto camera, and iPhone 15 Pro Max provides the longest optical zoom ever on iPhone: 5x at 120 mm. Great for close-ups, wildlife photos, and catching the action from further distances, the new Telephoto camera on iPhone 15 Pro Max has an innovative tetraprism design with a combined optical image stabilization and autofocus 3D sensor-shift module, Apple’s most advanced stabilization system yet.
As we’d been told to expect, the new iPhones do indeed switch to USB-C with the Pro models sporting USB 3 transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps. You’ll need to buy a new cable to get that, though. Other notable features include support for Wi-Fi 6E as well as an upgraded MagSafe that will support the Qi2 wireless charging standard.
On top of all this, Apple has expanded Emergency SOS via Satellite to include Roadside Assistance — a feature that will alert the AAA in the United States should you need vehicle assistance outside of a cellular area.
The lineup will be available in Black Titanium, White Titanium, Blue Titanium, and Natural Titanium.
The new iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999 for a 128GB model, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at $1,199 for a 256GB model. Preorders begin on September 15 while deliveries begin on September 22.
