Here are iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro eSIM benefits as detailed officially by Apple.
Apple’s brand new iPhone 14 lineup doesn’t include a SIM card tray for devices bought in the United States, meaning that the only way to connect them to a cellular network is to install an eSIM.
That’s something that has caused much concern about how people will handle getting connected when traveling abroad. Now, Apple has shared a support document outlining the process.
An eSIM is a virtual version of the physical plastic SIM cards that people have used for years, with Apple saying that they offer “many benefits while you travel abroad.” That’s despite frequent travelers saying that they normally buy a local SIM card and install it to avoid dealing with carrier roaming charges. Apple, however, says that shouldn’t be a problem because iPhones can store up to eight eSIMs at once. People can just get a local eSIM instead.
On your iPhone, you can store eight or more eSIMs, which will be there whenever you need them. You can have two eSIMs active on supported iPhone models at the same time. This could, for example, include one eSIM for your home and another eSIM for the place you’re visiting. You can swap which of your stored eSIMs are active simply by changing your selections in Settings. This might be helpful if you travel regularly to the same places.
Apple also suggests that people contact their own carrier to see if there are travel passes and other deals that they can take advantage of when using their existing eSIM abroad. If not, Apple also offers hints on buying eSIMs for carriers in the country people are visiting, too.
Apple’s international iPhone 14 models continue to ship with a physical SIM card tray, but that will likely change as more carriers support eSIMs. Whether people’s concern about international traveling is valid or not, we’ll find out over the next few months as more people use these handsets in the real world.
