Apple’s iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro went on sale last weekend and the demand for the more costly iPhone 12 Pro was reportedly higher than the company had anticipated.
According to a report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple expected the iPhone 12 to be the more popular device. But the reality was quite the opposite.
In terms of the split between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, Kuo estimates that demand for the more expensive model is higher than expected. The standard model was expected to be the more popular of the two, but early signs in iPhone 12 preorders suggest that demand is split equally between them.
That split between iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro has left Apple scrambling to get more LiDAR Scanners ready for increased production of its high-end model. According to DigiTimes, Apple has already increased its orders for the chips that go into the scanner.
Demand for the iPhone 12 Pro has been so strong delivery lead time from manufacturers has had to be extended. And Apple is set to increase orders for VCSEL chips supporting the iPhone 12 Pro’s LiDAR scanner for immersive augmented reality (AR).
Apple is poised to increase its orders for VCSEL chips for ToF-based LiDAR scanners used by the just released iPhone 12 Pro due to strong demand for the model, particularly in the US, according to sources at Taiwan-based supply chain makers.
Apple’s full iPhone 12 lineup isn’t even available yet. The smaller iPhone 12 mini and massive iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available for pre-order on November 6, with orders shipping on November 13.
All eyes will be on those two devices to see how the split works out, with pent up demand for a smaller iPhone potentially pushing it sales skyward. The iPhone 12 Pro Max does have a more impressive camera system, however.
