Japanese Apple news blog Macotakara is trying to get ahead of the curve by releasing what it believes to be solid iPhone 11 information. The often-reliable publication is suggesting that Apple’s iPhone 11 could come with a bidirectional wireless charging experience making it capable of wirelelssly charging other devices.
We have a number of Apple events ahead of us before we actually find out any official information relating to Apple’s next-generation iPhone. However, the Japanese blog is quoting Chinese supply chain sources to suggest that Apple’s iPhone 11 could offer similar functionality to that of the Wireless PowerShare feature found in Samsung’s latest stunning Galaxy S10 hardware.
This would mean that the device can be charged wireless with Qi-compatible chargers but is also capable of delivering inductive charging to other devices, such as the second-generation AirPods or Apple Watch.
Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known and well-respected analyst at TF International Securities had previously predicted this bidirectional charging functionality ahead of the Galaxy S10 launch. These latest reports are simply pouring fuel onto that fire and essentially corroborating those early predictions by one of the best analysts in the game. If accurate, it’s unknown exactly which hardware would be compatible with this type of charging delivered via iPhone 11 but it’s reasonable to assume that the new AirPods Charging Case would be a prime candidate.
The same report is suggesting that Apple will stay with its own proprietary Lightning port for iPhone 11 and forgo a speculated switch to USB-C. It will, however, bundle in the 18W USB wall charging brick which currently ships with iPad Pro and which consumers can choose to purchase as an independent accessory should they wish to do so.
There appears to have been enough people speculating on this bidirectional charging feature to instill confidence in the fact that iPhone 11 will be able to give charge as well as receive it. Whether or not that is enough of a boost to make consumers flock to iPhone 11 in their droves and upgrade from current devices is anyone’s guess. We’d argue not and hope to see something truly game-changing with Apple’s 2019 release.
