Apple’s iPadOS 17 compatibility tipped to ditch some old iPad models. Here are the details on this.
Apple’s iPadOS 17 is expected to be announced during the WWDC23 event in June and a new report suggests that it will cut a few older iPads adrift.
Anyone who has iOS 16 installed on their iPhone is expected to be able to install iOS 17, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with the iPadOS software update.
However, most people are likely to be unaffected and will be able to install the latest and greatest software that Apple has to offer regardless.
We’d seen some reports that some iPads wouldn’t get this new update and a new report by iPhoneSoft appears to back that up. Citing a source inside Apple the report says that three iPads, in particular, will be left running iPadOS 16.
These are the three iPads that are expected to miss out on iPadOS 17.
- iPad 5th gen
- 9.7-inch iPad Pro 1st gen
- 12.9-inch iPad Pro 1st gen
Those iPads will still likely get security updates as part of future iPadOS 16 updates, however.
Apple is expected to announce the new software on June 5, but it won’t be made available to the public until some point in September if past releases are any indication. That will come after months of developer and public beta tests alongside new software for the iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV.
All of those software updates will be released alongside the new iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 8 hardware in or around that September window.
