iPad Mini 7 Isn’t Expected To Feature ProMotion Display, Says Analyst

Despite rumors that Apple was planning to put 120Hz ProMotion into the iPad mini 7, a new report by one analyst suggests that is unlikely to be the case.

A previous report by one outlet claimed that Apple would add ProMotion support to the next iPad mini, giving it the same technology that is already offered by the iPad Pro.

However, when asked about the possibility on Twitter, display analyst Ross Young said that he would be “surprised” if such a thing happened.

Young went on to say that only Apple’s Pro models have the Oxide LCD required to offer ProMotion, while the current iPad mini used an a-Si LCD. That technology isn’t compatible with ProMotion, meaning Apple would need to switch technologies to make it work.

The main reason some want Apple to switch to a display that supports ProMotion is a jelly scrolling issue that some iPad mini 6 owners notice. That effect causes one half of the display to appear to scroll slightly more slowly than the other, creating a strange and unsettling effect. Moving to a higher refresh rate would fix that, something ProMotion would offer.

The previous report had said that the next iPad mini wouldn’t arrive this year, so it’s possible Apple could make changes to any existing plans before it does ship regardless.
