Apple’s September special event has been and gone and, as expected, we didn’t get to see any iPhones. But we did get to see a new iPad Air and it’s quite the impressive tablet. So impressive that it might be a better option than the 11-inch iPad Pro. Or is it?
We will be comparing the brand new iPad Air with the last model and the current 11-inch iPad Pro, and it makes for some interesting reading.
The screen size is the main thing that immediately jumps out. The new iPad Air comes with a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display which makes it look very similar to the iPad Pro. Its screen is only slightly smaller and of course, there’s no Home button. There’s no Face ID either, with Touch ID making the move to the Top button instead.
In terms of processing power, the iPad Air wins out over the iPad Pro thanks to the new Apple A14 Bionic chip. It does lose out in the camera department however, missing out on the 10-megapixel ultra wide camera the iPad Pro offers. There’s a LiDAR Scanner here though, something the older iPad Air can’t offer.
When you consider the fact the new iPad Air sells for the same $599 as the old iPad Air, it’s clear this is one hell of a machine. The arrival of USB-C also further closes the gap to the iPad Pro, too. Really, who will buy an iPad Pro at this point?
