Apple has today made available for download iOS 9.1 beta 3 to those individuals registered with an official Apple developer account. Today’s pre-release seed represents the next step in finalizing the iOS 9.1 software in preparation for a public unveiling, and comes three weeks after the Cupertino-based company seeded the initial iOS 9.1 beta to the developers community.
Those who currently have iOS 9.1 beta 2 installed on any compatible iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will be able to access today’s third beta as an Over-The-Air (OTA) update. This can be accessed by launching the native Settings app, heading to General, and selecting Software Update to check for an available update. The actual IPSW file can also be downloaded manually from the Apple Developer Center for those who prefer to have a physical copy of the installation file at hand. The firmware version that has been uploaded to Apple’s servers carries build number 13B5130b.
As usual, the accompanying release notes that have been uploaded alongside the firmware at the Apple Developer Center, don’t provide a great deal of information about what’s actually new in the release. Apple has however included a “Notes and Known Issues” section that provides information about a number of known problems – in particular, bugs – with this beta 3 release. Issues include two-factor authentication for iCloud Keychain accounts being routed via beta servers, as well as an issue whereby certain users will be shown a “Could Not Set Up iCloud Keychain” error. The included information also mentions how users can workaround these existing bugs as well.
Apple has quietly snuck in four new wallpapers as well. There are now 3 new planets to choose from, while an existing wallpaper has been given a slight makeover.
iOS 9.1 itself represents Apple’s continuation of its mobile platform and will ultimately introduce a number of new features when it eventually makes its way into the public domain. Support for Apple’s new iPad Pro is present within iOS 9.1, bringing compatibility updates to ensure that the company’s new Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil accessories both function correctly. There are also internal amendments to allow for a more seamless experience when using the iPhone and Apple’s new gaming-centric Apple TV 4 when it finally launches this coming month.
It’s currently unknown when iOS 9.1 will make its way out of the pre-release stage, and finally be classified as being ready for mainstream public consumption. It is highly likely that we will see at least another two betas introduced before that actually happens. Until then, those with a registered developer account can get immediate access to third beta right now.
Update x1: iOS 9.1 Public Beta 3 is now available to download as well.
