Apple released iOS 7.1 back in March, and with it, introduced CarPlay, iTunes Radio enhancements, and several other minor tweaks and alterations. Today, reports suggest that iOS 7.1.1 release is on its way, although it appears that said update will focus on house-keeping, with the usual spate of bug fixes and general performance enhancements.
The report arrives courtesy of 9to5Mac, which also notes that testing on iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 is currently being ramped up. It’s more than likely that the respective updates to both mobile and desktop software will be announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), and in anticipation for the showcasing to developers as well as the on looking tech world, testing has intensified.
The suppositions made in the 9to5 reports are based upon analytic data, but given that WWDC 2014 is set to fall on the first week of June, it makes sense that Apple would begin making preparations well in advance.
As discussed previously, iOS 8 is set to include a bunch of new features and apps, including an all new Healthbook app, which will serve as Apple’s first major delve into the lucrative fitness and wellbeing market. The feature, which may be presented as a card-like interface akin to Passbook, could also be accompanied by the so-called ‘iWatch.’ The last we heard, the fruit company’s wrist-worn gadget was slated for a Q3 release — conveniently in line with the projected launch of the next iPhone and iOS 8 — but irrespective of whether or not a smartwatch is in the offing, Healthbook is expected to be the marquee feature of the software update.
While iOS 8 will focus on features, OS X 10.10 looks set to join us in much the same manner as iOS 7 did in September of last year. Bringing some significant UI changes, the desktop software will almost certainly follow the design language of its mobile counterpart, with flat elements and clean lines throughout. Given Apple’s liking for uniformity, it’s almost certain that any trace of skeuomorphism will be eradicated from OS X 10.10, although it remains to be seen whether any alterations to functionality will also be forthcoming.
As far as the iOS 7.1.1 update goes, there’s no really any specific information available at this point, but at such a time as key details do come to light, we’ll be sure to let you guys know.
