Apple’s recent release of the third iOS 18.1 beta to developers brought with it a number of changes, including the addition of a new Clean Up feature under the Apple Intelligence umbrella.
The Apple Intelligence suite of features will launch in beta alongside the public iOS 18.1 release later this year, and Apple has been steadily adding new features as the iOS 18.1 beta progresses. The addition of Clean Up means that Photos users can now remove objects from photos when they wish to.
Using Clean Up is as simple as waving a finger over the area that needs to be removed. Circling the object also works, with Apple Intelligence then filling in the gap with what it believes should be there.
Limited testing has so far shown the feature to be better in some instances than others, but it’s important to remember that it is still early days for Apple Intelligence as a whole and Clean Up specifically.
Images that have been edited using Clean Up are marked as such in the metadata to ensure that people are aware that AI has been used. Interestingly, Clean Up can also be used to blur someone’s face as well, perfect for people who want to anonymize a photo before sharing it.
Apple Intelligence is currently only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, but all of the upcoming iPhone 16 family of devices is set to support it. Those handsets are set to be announced at an Apple event on September 9.
