Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 software update could turn the AirPods Pro wireless earbuds into hearing aids for the first time, according to a new report.
Writing in the in the weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman was answering a question about Apple’s AirPods plans.
Gurman believes that while there won’t be a new hardware update to the AirPods Pro this year, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t new features on the horizon.
Gurman believes that Apple is getting ready to add a new hearing aid mode to the AirPods Pro, although it isn’t yet clear if the plan is to add that to all versions of Apple’s best earbuds or if users will need to have the latest USB-C AirPods Pro 2 for the feature to work.
Apple already offers features that are designed to help people hear things including one that allows an iPhone to be used as a microphone with audio then piped into the earbuds. However, the suggestion seems to be that this new mode will go beyond that.
If Apple follows its usual pattern we can expect the company to announce the iOS 18 software update during the WWDC event in June before making it available to the public in the following September. The iOS 18 update is also likely to be joined by updates for the iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro.
