Apple is expected to debut the iPadOS 18 software update during the WWDC event in June but when it does, the company might be ready to remove support for some specific iPads.
According to a private account that posted on X but was later reported by MacRumors, Apple will ditch support for all iPad models powered by the A10X chip when the new tablet software arrives.
This account has now deleted the post but has a track record of sharing information about Apple’s software updates ahead of time.
If the report is accurate, Apple will no longer support the first-generation 10.5-inch iPad Pro or indeed the second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Both of those tablets were released in 2017.
This would mean that the following iPads would be supported when iPadOS 18 is released:
- iPad Pro: 2018 and later
- iPad Air: 2019 and later
- iPad mini: 2019 and later
- iPad: 2020 and later
Apple is likely to announce the new software update alongside those for the iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro at the June WWDC event before a months-long beta process concludes with a release in September.
Little is known about what the iPadOS software update will have to offer but rumors suggest that Apple is going to lean heavily into AI which could mean some notable upgrades are coming to Siri as well as other features.
