Apple didn’t make a big deal about it when it announced iOS 17 during the WWDC 2023 event on June 5, but the update is going to make a big change to the way third-party apps record video.
That’s because, for the first time, app developers will be able to support Cinematic mode — a feature that is currently only available to people who use the official Camera app.
“The Cinematic framework enables you to add professional-level editing and playback features to movies, recorded with the Camera app’s Cinematic mode, to your apps,” Apple’s developer documentation explains as reported by MacRumors.
“These are the same features used in applications such as Final Cut Pro, Photos, and iMovie. For example, this enables your apps to change focus distance and aperture in movies, creating a bokeh effect, even after recording.”
Cinematic mode allows video to be recorded with a shallow depth of field, creating a blurred background. There is also an automatic focus that changes between subjects as they’re captured.
The Cinematic mode feature in Apple’s Camera app is only supported on the iPhone 13 or newer, and it’s designed to me used when creating cinematic footage.
The iOS 17 update is now available in beta form but it isn’t expected to ship to the public until this September, likely around the same time that Apple will release the iPhone 15 lineup of devices.
