Apple recently released the first RC (release candidate) version of iOS 16.4 and people are now putting it through its paces. One of the things that people have noticed throughout the beta process is a new accessibility feature designed for those who suffer from epilepsy.
The new feature appears to dim flashing lights in videos in an attempt to protect those who are likely to be affected by such things.
A screenshot showing the feature was posted to Reddit, with Apple’s description also pointing out that its media player will display when portions of video with flashing lights are coming up.
Video content that depicts repeated flashing or strobing lights will be automatically dimmed. The video timeline will display when flashing lights occur in the timeline for supported media.
That’s a big accessibility addition and it’s one that could be hugely important for people who have epilepsy.
There is currently no hard indication of when Apple will release iOS 16.4 to the public, but we’re expecting it to be soon given the recent RC update. It’s possible that Apple will make iOS 16.4 available to the public before the end of March, but time will tell. That may well depend on whether any big issues were discovered as part of that RC release.
For those who have iOS 16.4 installed, the new feature can be found under the Motion section of the Accessibility options in the Settings app.
