Apple’s iOS 16.4 update is going to change the way that betas function, removing the use of beta profiles and having people configure their beta access on the iPhone itself.
To do that they’ll need an active Apple ID aligned with the developer or public beta channels. Now Apple is working to add that functionality.
The latest iOS 16.4 beta includes support for adding an Apple ID for use with beta testing, possibly to allow people to add a different one from their main Apple ID. Main Apple IDs are the ones signed into iCloud for things like Photos, Mail, and other iCloud features. That presents a problem if you have to sign into a developer ID, for example.
This new functionality, built into iOS 16.4 beta 3, seems designed to deal with that complication. Apple’s text certainly suggests that it’s aware people use multiple Apple IDs.
Sign in with a different Apple ID that is enrolled in the Apple Beta Software Program or Apple Developer Program.
The removal of Apple developer beta profiles means that people who download those profiles from the internet will no longer be able to do so. That prevents people from accessing the betas when they shouldn’t, for example.
From iOS 16.4 onwards, it appears that only those whose Apple ID has been registered as a developer or public beta tester will be able to install betas.
