Apple’s iOS 16 update brought a ton of new features to iPhones, but there is one that most didn’t notice. Yet it’s one that could make a big difference to the way a ton of people use their devices.
With iOS 16, Apple added the option for a Dvorak keyboard.
Apple’s decision to add the alternative keyboard option was first noticed months ago by some on Twitter, but it’s only recently that Ars Technica and The Verge picked up on the fact.
The Dvorak keyboard was originally built as an alternative to the QWERTY keyboard option that most of us use on the daily. The Dvorak layout is said to be more ergonomic than anything else, especially QWERTY.
It’s one that a lot of people swear by, but while it’s said to be useful for two-handed typing it isn’t clear how much of a difference it will make when typing on an iPhone’s screen.

However, if you use Dvorak on a Mac, there is sure to be benefit from not switching from one layout to another when picking up your iPhone.
Those wishing to use a Dvorak layout prior to the arrival of iOS 16 could do so, but it required that they use a third-party keyboard instead of the one pre-installed on their device. With iOS 16, that’s no longer required.
