Apple’s latest iOS 16 beta 5 release has brought the iPhone’s battery percentage back for the first time. The percentage was a feature of the iPhone’s status bar for years, but it was removed when the iPhone X and its notch arrived in 2017.
People have been crying out for the return of the battery percentage ever since and it’s now here, five years later.
The battery percentage has returned in the latest iOS 16 beta, although it is worth remembering that it could change or disappear entirely before the update is released to the public. That’s expected to take place as soon as next month, likely around the same time that Apple announces the new iPhone 14 lineup.
The new iPhone 14 is expected to sport a smaller notch, causing some to believe that Apple could change the way the status bar works in order to make use of the extra space. That’s still a possibility — the battery percentage sits within the battery logo on iPhone 13 but could be placed beside it on newer iPhone 14 models.
Interestingly, the new battery percentage indicator “is not available on the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 13 mini.”
That seems likely to be a simple case of Apple being unsure whether it could make the text legible on smaller devices, and with there being no iPHone 14 mini this year it’s a problem it won’t have to deal with moving forward.
