Apple’s upcoming iOS 16 and macOS Ventura updates will add a new feature that is designed to help ensure that people aren’t caught out by fishing scams.
With the two new updates installed, users will see a company’s logo beside an email if it is confirmed as genuine. However, companies will need to be registered for the feature to work.
The new feature, called Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI,) is now available as part of the iOS 16 and macOS Ventura betas, the second of which have been released to developers. The MacRumors notes that the feature will require authentication, and if the email passes, a company logo will appear.
For a brand’s logo to be displayed, the sender’s domain must pass DMARC authentication checks, according to the BIMI Group website. If the email passes authentication, the Mail app queries the DNS for a corresponding BIMI record.
The logos will be accessed when someone expands a message’s header, assuming the sender is legitimate and has been registered.
Apple’s iOS 16 and macOS Ventura are currently available in developer beta with a public beta program expected to run starting next month. The final updates, once all beta testing is complete, will be available to the public in or around September.
