Apple introduced iOS 14 during its WWDC opening keynote on Monday and we’re still learning more and more about what the update means for users. We now know that users of older iPhones can look forward to new and improved camera features, for example.
Starting out it appears that users of older iPhones can look forward to “improved shot-to-shot performance” according to Apple. That apparently means that shots will be taken up to 90% faster than with iOS 13 installed; portrait shots a good 15% faster!
Owners of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, and the 2020 iPhone SE in particular, will also receive QuickTake support. That will allow users to record a video by holding down the shutter button when taking a photo. It prevents the need to switch modes when you decide that a video is more suitable than a still shot, for example.
Other improvements include Night Mode’s new gyroscope feature, showing users when the camera is moving in a shot, and to help keep it stable. Started taking a Night Mode shot but want to cancel it instead of waiting for the predefined time to pass? No problem, you can now cancel a shot at will.
Improvements on the QR code-reading-front have also been added, making it easier to scan smaller codes and even those that are wrapped around objects.
Users can also now press the Volume Down button to take a photo, too. Users can now also lock exposure and focus for the entire camera session unlike before, and is much welcomed edition indeed.
All of these new features are being tested by developers right now with a public beta coming next month. It’s likely that Apple will make this update available to all in or around September, too.
