iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 Finally Allows Users To Set Deafult Mail And Browser App

Apple today announced iOS 14 alongside iPadOS 14, macOS 11 Big Sur, and more. While there was plenty of time lavished on some impressive features and updates there was one change that didn’t get mentioned beyond appearing briefly on a slide. For the first time, Apple will let users choose a default app for their web browser and email client.

This is a feature that people have been asking for a ton forever and now it’s finally coming in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 when they land in or around September.

Set default email and browser apps. With iOS 14, you can set a third‑party app as the default email or browser app systemwide.

This will hopefully be the end of tapping a link and having Safari open, even though you live inside Chrome. Or trying to send an email and have the Mail app open despite the fact it isn’t even configured. While Apple might say this is a power user feature, we think it’s one that a huge number of people will be glad to see arrive.

If only we hadn’t had to wait until iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 for it to make it to our iPhones and iPads. Still, it’s better late than never, right?

Apple’s iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 betas are now in the hands of developers with public betas set to be made available next month.
