iOS 13: New Optimized Battery Charging Feature Aims To Smartly Improve Battery Health

The world of the iPhone and its battery is one that has found itself in many headlines in recent years, whether that’s because they don’t last as long as they should or Apple is being forced to replace them at a discounted rate. This time it’s for much better reasons, though, with iOS 13 beta 1 outing a new battery optimization feature.

Found in the Battery area of the Settings app, the new section is in the “Battery Health” subsection and is a simple toggle called Optimized Battery Charging. When activated, the iPhone will “learn your charging routine so it can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use it,” according to the explanation in-app.

The theory is that your iPhone will learn that you normally take your phone off-charge at a specific time in the morning. Based on that, it will hold off charging the final 20% of battery capacity until closer to that time so as to avoid the device sitting at 100% charge for too long. This should help to prolong battery health.

This feature is currently available in iOS 13 beta 1 and while it didn’t receive any stage time during the announcement at WWDC, it could be one of the best additions yet. Everyone has endured an iPhone with poor battery life at some point, and this feature may help to prolong a device’s battery a little bit longer. To that, we give a very big thumbs up.

If you’re not a developer and want to take this feature for a spin, Apple is expected to release a public beta of iOS 13 next month. A full public release will come later this year.
