Liang Chen of KeenLabs has demonstrated a functional iOS 12.1.3 through 12.2 jailbreak at this year’s Infiltrate gathering. During the demonstration, Chen showed a jailbroken iPhone XS Max running Cydia as proof of liberation.
This is yet more evidence that Apple’s mobile iOS platform can indeed be jailbroken beyond what we currently have with the popular Chimera and unc0ver jailbreaks.
Those solutions are able to liberate iOS 12 from Apple’s walled garden but only as far as iOS 12.1.2. As demonstrated, Chen’s jailbreak takes that a few steps further with full PAC and APRR bypass up to iOS 12.2 but it’s highly unlikely, if not guaranteed, that this will ever make it into the hands of the general public.
Developers, security researchers, and hackers who are associated with companies like KeenLabs who actually manage to create and showcase a jailbreak or product offering of this nature tend to either sell it on to a third-party for a large reward or reveal the exploits and vulnerabilities to Apple in order to collect the bounty.
This not only allows the company to be profitable and actually get paid for the valuable security research that it carries out on platforms like iOS but also stay away from the negativity and toxic behavior which seems to have engulfed the jailbreak community in recent years.
In short, this is a technical exercise which proves that up to iOS 12.2 can be jailbroken and allows Chen and his team at KeenLabs to flex their hacker’s muscles, but don’t get your hopes up of actually being able to benefit from this work as it’s likely going to end up in the hands of Apple or a faceless company wanting to benefit from this work.
For those who prefer to err on the side of positivity and focus on the good side of a situation, this work has resulted in a demonstrable jailbreak running Cydia all the way up to iOS 12.2, thus proving that it can actually be jailbroken. Hopefully, just hopefully, this could result in other prominent figureheads in the community taking another glance beyond iOS 12.1.2 and seeing if Chimera or uncover could be updated to not only support firmware beyond iOS 12.1.2 but to also support all of Apple’s latest devices.
