The iPhone can sometimes benefit from battery life increases once a new version of iOS is released, thanks to optimizations and the like. The exact opposite can also happen, with the changes Apple makes between releases sometimes been less kind on the battery after an update.
How things will shake out is far from predictable, and that’s where YouTube channel iAppleBytes comes into play.
By taking an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, and an iPhone 8, the channel runs the popular Geekbench battery life benchmark on an older version of iOS, then updates the phones and runs the test again. The video starts with iOS 12.1.3 and then ends with iOS 12.1.4, the update Apple released in order to put an end to the Group FaceTime bug that was the talk of the town recently. The question, however, what whether the update makes any real difference to battery life.
You can check the video out for yourselves to make your own conclusion, but our feeling is that the differences were so marginal, and so ranging, that we can’t really say that any battery differences are to be seen between the two releases. Which makes sense considering the lack of feature set change between the two releases. The biggest difference was the iPhone 8, which gained an extra six minutes of battery life when updated to iOS 12.1.4. Over the course of a full battery drain, that’s not that huge of a difference.
It’s an interesting test that sometimes yields some interesting statistics. This time however, we’re not so sure that there is much to take from this round of tests.
