Lead Unc0ver developer Pwn20wnd has shared a timely update on the status of the full A12-A12X iOS 12-12.1.2 jailbreak tool. Coming via Twitter, the update confirms that a number of items need to be resolved before a full and functional tool can be offered to support those devices.
It was just under three weeks ago when the Unc0ver team announced that their jailbreak came equipped with partial jailbreak support as far as iOS 12 and A12/A12X devices were concerned.
Without a doubt, that was definitely a step in the right direction, but it certainly wasn’t enough to appease the masses, and even the developers and hackers themselves would be feeling quite aggrieved that they hadn’t yet achieved the “full” jailbreak status on those device and firmware combinations. Now, with this update via Twitter, we know exactly what needs to be done to proceed:
What’s left for full A12-A12X support:
– Cydia Substrate needs to be updated for tweak injection on arm64e devices
– Unrestrict library needs to be updated for sandbox patches on arm64e devices
It doesn’t sound like a huge list of things which need to be achieved to take that next step but things are not always as simple as they first appear to be. Comments on the tweet thread have confirmed that Jay Freeman, a.k.a saurik, is currently working on the first part in order to bring Cydia Substrate up to scratch for arm64e devices. Pwn20wnd has also confirmed that he himself is working on the updating of the Unrestrict library and that he has been hampered by the fact that he doesn’t currently have an A12(X) device running iOS 12.0-12.0.1 in order to fully finalize the work and test it accurately. Although he does add that he will “get that done.”
Things may have been slightly delayed due to an unfortunate circumstance whereby Pwn20wnd actually bootlooped his device as part of his testing and was forced to upgrade to a version of iOS which isn’t jailbreakable. This is one of the major drivers for the developer and hacking needing to get his hands on a new A12X device running vulnerable versions of Apple’s iOS platform.
Let’s hope that device ownership can be achieved sooner rather than later and we can progress to a public release.
