It seems that things are hotting up in the jailbreak community as far as iOS 11.2 – iOS 11.2.6 is concerned. A number of the well-respected big hitters in the community have been openly discussing an iOS 11.2.6 jailbreak on Twitter, with Electra developer CoolStar advising that device owners on iOS 11.2-11.2.6 should “stay on their current firmware.”
As is always the case with this modern jailbreak community that we find ourselves invested in, the timeline of events is somewhat blurry and not everything is linear and in one place as we are dealing with multiple people and personalities.
However, in this instance, it seems that Min Zheng of Alibaba Labs sparked things off with a tweet confirming root shell on the latest iOS 11.3 firmware. That tweet was then followed up by Zheng with a clarification that what he was sharing wasn’t a jailbreak due to the fact that “we didn’t remount the rootfs to R/W and install Cydia.”
That’s where CoolStar and Chris Wade – or, @CWDotMe if you follow him on Twitter – waded into the conversation. CoolStar confirmed that he may have something to do the exact job that Min Zheng was referencing, whereas Chris Wade took things a step further and actually pasted a full code snippet of those requirements to Pastebin with confirmation that it should do the required job on devices running iOS 11.2.6 but not iOS 11.3.
That post then sparked CoolStar to advise users to stay on their current firmware if they are currently running iOS 11.2-11.2.6.
It’s yet another development in the complex cat and mouse game which currently exists between security researchers, jailbreak developers, and Apple. There has been no official confirmation from CoolStar that he would actively be working on this jailbreak to support iOS 11.2-11.2.6 but we have to assume that his tweet regarding current firmware is an indication that he is at least entertaining the idea of updating Electra to support newer firmware or introducing a new tool altogether.
We do also need to remember that CoolStar declared that he was walking away from iOS jailbreak development earlier this year after a build of Electra was leaked into the public domain before it was ready.
As always, the jailbreak community is a confusing and often erratic place to be. Let’s hope that we see an iOS 11.2.6 jailbreak for public sooner rather than later.
