There is some more positive news coming out of the jailbreak community today. It’s been confirmed that the recently released iOS 11.1.2 exploit for potential jailbreak released by Ian Beer is confirmed to be working on Apple TV 4K running tvOS 11.x as well.
Jonathan Levin, author of Mac OS X and IOS Internals, and developer of LiberTV has taken to Twitter to confirm the news.
It’s been somewhat of a whirlwind week or so where jailbreaking is concerned. We are still yet to actually see a functional jailbreak for iOS 11.1.2 or tvOS 11.x released into the community for public consumption, but the levels of activity in the community, specifically from Ian Beer of Google’s Project Zero and Jonathan Levin, suggests that something is coming and that the necessary components could potentially be in place for something which could ultimately be released to public.
Levin has confirmed the existence of the bug in tvOS 11.x and paid major props to Ian Beer for the discovery:
Congratulating unparalleled paragon of hacking @i41nbeer for a truly marvelous, clean exploit which also works (*confirmed*) on TvOS 11.x and the Apple TV 4K! My #Jailbreak #Toolkit will be expanded to support this platform as well – and #LiberTV will finally get its update 🙂
The tweet also confirmed that LiberTV jailbreak tool for Apple TV will “finally” get an update, presumably to support tvOS 11.x running on Apple’s latest Apple TV 4K hardware, with the caveat being provided in a later tweet that any jailbreak will not be untethered. In fact, the tweet confirmed that “there will not be another untethered JB in [sic] foreseeable future until a major code signing 0-day blows.”
Like the previous version of LiberTV for Apple TV 4 running tvOS 9.1 through to tvOS 10.1, the updated version will be able to run unsigned code and inject libraries where necessary but is unlikely to offer Cydia or Cydia Substrate support.
As always, when the LiberTV update is finalized and pushed into a public offering, we will be sure to let you know immediately. Additionally, we’ll keep you updated on the status of any known jailbreak for iOS 11.1.2 or below based on Ian Beer’s exploit, including any progressions in that area or any ultimate releases, should one come to fruition.
