Historically speaking, we used to sit and wait patiently for companies like Apple to officially announce any new features which would ultimately make it into updated versions of platforms like iOS. Now, thanks to pre-release seeds of firmware, keen-eyed developers have the ability to interrogate the source and actually find some of those improvements before they make it to market.
By digging into the latest beta of iOS 11, developers have been able to find a plethora of new icons which point to a host of new workouts coming to Apple Watch.
It’s always interesting to see exactly how each individual firmware release can relate to various platforms in the Apple ecosystem. In the very recent past developers have been able to use the leaked HomePod firmware to discover facts pertaining to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 8, as well as new tidbits about Apple Watch.
This discovery within the latest iOS 11 beta is exactly the same, suggesting that Apple Watch owners will soon have access to a variety of new workout types in addition to the ones which have just been added under the “Other” tab on the latest version of watchOS.
Apple Watch owners currently enjoy access to a multitude of workout types on all versions of the hardware. The unveiling of watchOS 4 at this year’s WWDC signified Apple’s intention to expand and improve on those workouts, and now, with the latest discovery in the iOS 11 beta, it looks as though there will be more to enjoy sooner-rather-than-later.
The newly discovered icons hint at workouts for American football, bowling, dancing, baseball, as well as a number of different workouts in the snow, such as skiing and snowboarding, and even fighting and surfing. If it raises the heart level, burns calories, and involves any type of energy expenditure, then it looks as though Apple Watch will support it as a workout.
Apple has now exposed some of those workouts in the latest watchOS update, but there’s a train of thought suggesting that some of them could be saved for release alongside Apple Watch Series 3, which is actually expected in the coming weeks. In fact, it’s very likely that we could see a LTE-enabled Apple Watch Series 3 unveiled at the upcoming iPhone 7s / iPhone 8 release event next month.
