The world of iOS jailbreaking is going through quite a lot of activity these days, with new jailbreaks and new exploits being announced more regularly than they have for a number of years.
One existing jailbreak, Meridian, is a semi-tethered offering for iOS 10.3.3 but according to its developer, there may be grounds for optimism that a fully untethered alternative could be possible.
In a post to Twitter, developer Ben Sparkes shared news that, in theory at least, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 devices may be able to be jailbroken across iOS 10.x without the need for tethering, something that is not currently possible.
Theoretically, an iPhone 6, 6S, and 7 *fully untethered* jailbreak is possible on iOS 10.x, however I really really need some testing devices to look into it further. This would be just like back in the day, boot it up and it’s already jailbroken, style.
While a semi-tethered jailbreak is undoubtedly better than a tethered solution, the possibility of being able to jailbreak and iPhone or an iPad without any need to consider the implications of re-jailbreaking again and again after reboot is something that jailbreaking fans will be particularly pleased to hear.
Sparkes has not given any indications as to when more information will become available, if at all, but the fact that he has seen fit to even mention that he is working on it should give us hope that we could see something in the future, no matter how far out that may be.
After a couple of years of spiralling interest, the jailbreak community is once again thriving. Work like that carried out by Ben Sparkes is a prime example of that, and long may it continue.
