Apple and Donate Life America have announced that iOS 10 will bring an important breakthrough change to the stock Health app. Today’s announcement from Apple and Donate Life America confirms that for the first time ever users will be able to register to be an organ, eye, or tissue donor from within the Heath app when iOS 10 launches later this year.
The integration will take potential donors through a simple sign-up process that includes a registration process as well as an educational element to inform of the importance of organ donation.
Apple has made no secret of the importance that it places going forward on the stock Health app that now ships as a default part of the iOS experience. That importance is only driven higher by the fact that Apple is passionate about working with healthcare institutions and care providers to try and better the lives of device users through innovative and life-changing technology solutions.
Now, for the first time ever, all registrations made within the Health app in iOS 10 will be submitted directly to the National Donate Life Registry, which is managed by Donate Life America.
On average, one person dies every hour in the United States waiting for an organ transplant because the demand for lifesaving transplants far exceeds the available supply of organs — and one donor can save as many as eight lives,” said David Fleming, President & CEO of Donate Life America. “By working with Apple to bring the National Donate Life Registry to the Health app on iPhone, we’re making it easier for people to find out about organ, eye and tissue donation and quickly register. This is a huge step forward that will ultimately help save lives”.
It may be easy to offer a cynical view on this and suggest that it isn’t really a beneficial “feature” baked into iOS 10, but there’s really no getting away from the fact that this easy and simple sign-up process will ultimately be the facilitator that will lead to lives being saved. Technology is intended to enhance and enrich our lives, and there’s no real better enrichment than being granted the ability live a longer, fuller and ultimately richer life with loved ones.
More than 120,000 Americans are currently waiting for a lifesaving transplant, with a new individual added to that list on average every ten minutes. Developers with access to the current iOS 10 beta are able to access this feature instantly. The general public in the United States will be able to register themselves as a donor through the Health app with the release of iOS 10 later this year.
