Apple got its WWDC off to a great start by announcing updated versions of each and every operating system it makes. That means the iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mac, Apple Watch and even Apple TV is in for a big software update later this year, and from what Apple has shown, they’re all going to be something special. As is always the case with Apple’s WWDC keynotes, all of the big software releases are already available to download for anyone who is a registered Apple developer, meaning there are people running iOS 10 beta 1 and macOS Sierra beta 1 already.
Whether they have installed the software on hardware dedicated for development, or one of their personal devices, Apple’s new software is out in the wild.
Soon though, anyone who registers for Apple’s Public Beta Program will also be able to get in on the action, and they won’t have long to wait.
From Apple’s iOS 10 release notes:
The developer preview of iOS 10 is available to iOS Developer Program members at developer.apple.com starting today, and a public beta program will be available to iOS users in July at beta.apple.com.
The macOS release notes reiterates:
Mac users can sign up for the macOS Sierra Beta Program today and download the software starting in July at beta.apple.com.
Announced alongside the developer release of today’s big announcements, Apple has also made it clear that those on the public beta programs will be able to get their hands on iOS, macOS and all the rest as soon as next month. That presumably gives Apple enough time to iron out all the show-stopping bugs that will likely be part of early releases, with developers taking the brunt of the force while public testers get something altogether more stable for when their own devices are upgraded. It makes plenty of sense to stagger things in this way, and even though it means some people may have to wait longer to try out the new hotness, in reality, that’s probably a very good thing, indeed. It just might not feel that way when you’re on the sidelines looking in.
