The Galaxy S4 from Samsung may only have been around for a short while, but already, developers have figured how users of the I9500 model can install ClockworkMod recovery (CWM) v6.0.3.1 using the ever-reliant Odin tool. As usual, we’ve got the how-to tutorial for you right after the break, so if you would like to install the very latest CWM on your gleaming new Galaxy S4, check out the details below!
This tutorial for flashing ClockworkMod 6.0.3.1 will only work with the Galaxy S4 I9500 model, so please do not try it with any other device. If you’re unsure as to what model you’re running, head to Settings > About Phone to verify that you are indeed running the I9500 model.
Before we proceed, there are a couple of other things you should note. Firstly, backup everything that you wish to keep on your phone. You can follow our: How to completely backup your Android device on PC without root access guide to make a full backup. Secondly, make sure you have all of the relevant Samsung Android USB driver for Galaxy S4. Thirdly, make sure you’ve enabled USB debugging mode, and finally, ensure your device has a steady supply of battery juice, to prevent drainage midway through the process. Battery life above 70% is highly recommended for the entire process.
As ever, Redmond Pie will not accept any responsibility for device damage / error as a result of following this tutorial. Proceed at your own risk.
With the formalities out of the way, here is how you install install CWM Recovery on the Galaxy S4 I9500
Step 1: Download and extract the following files:
Step 2: Power down your device completely before booting back up in Download Mode. This is achieved by holding Volume Down and Home simultaneously, before long-pressing the Power button until a message appears prompting you to tap Volume Up.
Step 3: Launch Odin3 v3.07.exe as extracted in Step 1, ensuring that you do so as an Administrator on Windows.
Step 4: Connect your S4 to your computer, ensuring that an "Added" message pops up in the bottom left-hand area of the Odin interface. If you don’t see the message, try another USB port, and failing that, check the relevant USB drivers are installed.
Step 5: Open the cofface_I9500_cwm_recovery_en_new.tar file you extracted in Step 1, ensuring you’ve also checked the PDA checkbox. Also, you’ll need to make sure that the Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checkboxes are checked. Make sure that Re-partition is unchecked, or your device could become permanently bricked.
Step 6: Hit the Start button in Odin, and the flashing process will commence. Once CWM recovery has been successfully flashed, your device will reboot, and a message "Pass" should confirm as much by appearing in the left-hand side of the Odin interface.
