Instagram appears to be working on a way to send two-factor authentication codes to users via WhatsApp messages in the future.
Currently, Instagram supports apps, SMS, login requests, and of course backup codes as a way to confirm a user’s identify.
The move would see codes sent to Instagram users via WhatsApp, another company that is currently owned by Facebook. Testing is currently underway as noted by leaker and app analyst Alessandro Paluzzi. They were also able to share screenshots of what appears to be the configuration workflow.
Users will need to first enable text-based two-factor authentication before toggling WhatsApp support on.
Support for two-factor authentication is vital because it ensures that people can’t gain access to an account just by knowing its username and password. With people reusing passwords and data breaches on the rise, having another authentication method is important. Receiving a code, or generating one using an app, ensures that nobody can gain access without having that code first.
There’s no indication when we should expect WhatsApp support like this to make its way to Instagram, or indeed if it will ever happen at all. Not everything tested by companies like Instagram finds its way into the public apps.
