Apple Intelligence has officially rolled out across iPhones, iPads, and Macs, bringing advanced AI capabilities to users.
However, these features come with a hefty storage requirement that’s already raising eyebrows.
Initially, when Apple Intelligence launched with iOS 18.1, it required 4GB of free storage. This was expected since Apple prioritizes on-device processing for privacy, meaning your device needs to download the AI models. But following iOS 18.2’s release, the requirement has significantly increased. Apple now confirms that Apple Intelligence requires 7GB of free storage per device.
If you’re using an iPhone, iPad, and Mac together, this adds up to a total of 21GB. Unfortunately, there’s no way to lower this by turning off certain features as it’s an all-or-nothing requirement.
The increase coincides with several impressive new features introduced in iOS 18.2, such as:
- ChatGPT in Siri: Supercharging Siri with conversational AI
- Genmoji: Personalized, AI-generated emojis
- Image Playground: Tools for creating AI-powered visuals
- Visual Intelligence: Advanced image recognition
- Compose with ChatGPT: Intelligent writing assistance
These features undoubtedly make Apple Intelligence more compelling, but they also highlight a growing challenge: managing storage space.
As more AI tools are added to Apple Intelligence, storage demands are likely to grow even further.
