We’ve told you about our disdain for the way iOS currently handles notifications over and over, and now there’s a new alternative on the block – iconNotifier.
The idea is an interesting one. Once installed via Cydia, this little tweak will block the standard iOS notification popups and reroute them through a new icon based notification system. What this means is from now on, all notifications will scroll underneath the icon for the app that generated them, replacing the name of the app itself. It sounds cool, and it is!
Currently not all apps are supported, but all the major ones are:
- Phone
- Voicemail
- SMS
- Push
- Calendar
- Alarm
- Timer
- Low Power Warnings
- iPod
- Popup Blocker
You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch to install it. Follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with Redsn0w on iOS 4.2.1 (or untethered with GreenPois0n RC5), or with Limera1n on iOS 4.1, or with PwnageTool on iOS 4.3 (Sn0wbreeze if you are on Windows) if you haven’t already.
Check out the video demo embedded below to see how it works.
You can head on over to Cydia and try it for yourself. iconNotifier is priced at $2.99 and is available via the BigBoss repo.
