Huawei Demote Employees After They Were Caught Greeting Users On Twitter Using iPhone

You may remember that shortly after the turn of the year we told you about the latest company to fall foul of the course of tweeting from an iPhone instead of its own devices.

Huawei, the Chinese company that makes some pretty great, relatively inexpensive phones sent a tweet out on New Year’s Eve to wish its followers a happy new year, but as YouTuber Marques “MKBHD” Brownlee noted, the tweet was sent from an iPhone. Now we know that as a result, the company just demoted two employees.

While the is far from the first time we have seen an Android phone maker send a tweet from an iPhone, it’s the first time we have been privy to the aftermath, and it’s absolutely not pretty. Apparently the problem came when the tweet was outsourced to a social media manager who then had problems with their desktop computer. Presumably panicked, they then picked up a nearby iPone and sent the tweet instead. The rest, as they say, is history.

The mistake occurred when outsourced social media handler Sapient experienced “VPN problems” with a desktop computer so used an iPhone with a roaming SIM card in order to send the message on time at midnight, Huawei said in the memo.

According to Reuters, Huawei isn’t just blaming the third-party and is instead blaming the people who decided to use them, saying that the mistake showed “procedural incompliance and management oversight.”

As a result, two employees have been demoted and had their pay cut by more than $700 (5,000 yuan.) A third worker, a Huawei digital marketing director, will have their pay frozen for a whole year.

Wow.
