Huawei Delays Launch Of Its Foldable Phone Mate X, Here’s Why

It’s not been a good few weeks for foldable phones and now Huawei has delayed the launch of its Mate X handset from June to September.

The news comes after Samsung had to halt its own rollout of the Galaxy Fold due to a number of devices failing while in the hand of reviewers. Today, Huawei told both CNBC and The Wall Street Journal that it was going to be doing additional testing to make sure the Mate X is ready for prime time. It also said that it was being “cautious” following the failed Galaxy Fold launch.

Huawei is so worried about something going wrong with the Mate X launch that a company spokesperson told CNBC that it didn’t want the phone to “destroy our reputation,” which is quite the worry. Huawei is already in the midst of a nightmare given its ongoing battle with the United States and other countries in relation to its ties with the Chinese government.

All eyes have been on the Mate X since Samsung’s decision to delay the Galaxy Fold. Many had wondered whether Huawei had simply managed to dodge the bullet that Samsung took square in the chest, but it seems that the company isn’t at all sure that’s the case and is instead erring on the side of caution. That’s a stance that few will argue with.

If and when the Mate X does ship, it will cost around $2600 and sports a single 8-inch OLED panel that folds in the middle. It features 5G support, too.
