Face ID has been heralded as a huge success for Apple and iPhone X. Even those who don’t necessarily love Apple and the iPhone, or who don’t love everything that iPhone X offers, seem to unanimously agree that Face ID is an absolute triumph for Apple, and one that works largely flawlessly thus far.
However, it is being reported that some iPhone X owners are having Face ID issues when trying to unlock the device in bed. Thankfully, it turns out it isn’t a huge issue and the resolution is rather simple.
Some people have feared that it could be a case of having low-light conditions in the bedroom. Or a belief that a stray part of the duvet or a pillow could be temporarily obstructing the TrueDepth camera system from gathering a full scan of the owner’s face. However, it doesn’t seem to be either of those things.
According to Apple, for Face ID to function correctly, the iPhone X needs to be 10-20 inches away from the device owner’s face in order to get an accurate and full scan. It seems that when trying to use a device in bed, most people are actually bringing the device closer to their face than during normal usage.
It could be that you wake up in middle of the night with blurry eyes and need to read your Snapchat messages by holding the phone closer than usual to your face because you generally wear glasses or contact lenses and you have been asleep without so can’t see the screen properly unless you put it right up on your face. Or it could be that the angle that you lie in bed just means that when you pick the iPhone X up you are naturally holding it extremely close to your face.
The trick here is to actually make a conscious effort to hold the device how you would normally use it during normal day-to-day activities, which does actually take a little bit of getting used to, but can actually make a huge difference to how Face ID works and the levels of accuracy that it provides.
So, next time you wake up in the middle of the night, and you need to check something on iPhone X, make sure to keep it at least 10-20 inches away from your face for it to work quickly and more accurately.
It’s also important to note here that Face ID has AI powers, meaning it learns as you keep using the device more and it gets better, faster and more accurate with time.
